Participating in ResearchPatients receiving cochlear implants at the University of Miami Cochlear Implant Center have the option of being involved in clinical research. Some studies are simply a collection of data during normal implant programming. Others involve the use of brand new, cutting edge devices, which are part of a “clinical trial”. Clinical trials use devices that are past the experimental stage and have FDA endorsement for limited “pre-market” use with volunteers. All studies have Institutional Review Board approval and monitoring. It is perfectly acceptable for patients to choose to not be involved in research projects.
