Cochlear Implant Research Scientists
Thomas R. Van De Water, Ph.D. is Professor and Director of the Cochlear
Implant Research Program. He is a graduate of Western Carolina University
with doctoral studies at The New York University and post doctoral studies
at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. His clinical interest is in
molecular medicine and research interest is in the prevention of sensory
cell loss and sensory cell renewal in deaf patients with cochlear implants.
He is currently director of a grant focused on neural preservation after
cochlear implant electrode insertion.

Xue Zhong Liu, Ph.D., M.D. is
Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology. He is a graduate of the West China
University of Medical Sciences with a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester,
England. His residency was at the Medical Research Center, Mammalian
and Genetics Unit in Oxford England and fellowship at the University
of Manchester, England. His research interest is identification of genes
for nonsyndromic deafness and Usher Syndrome, audiologic and clinic features
of genetic deafness and molecular genetics of deafness.
Denise Yan, Ph.D. is Research Assistant Professor. She is a graduate
of the University of Montreal with doctoral and post doctoral studies
at the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan and the Johns
Hopkins University. Her research interests are identification and function
of genes for non-syndromic deafness and Usher Syndrome.
